Summer is winding down, but there is still time for a weekend staycation just south of Indy. Spending a day or two exploring your own town or a nearby community can be just as memorable as a trip out of the state. It’s also more accessible, affordable and a great way to support your local communities.
Here are the five things you need to plan the perfect staycation in Franklin, Greenwood, Bargersville and the other communities of Festival Country.
1. A recreational activity
Soak up the summer rays and enjoy the Greenwood and Franklin multi-use trails and parks.
Many of the trails around the county are perfect for walking, biking, rollerblading and more. The paved paths are pet-friendly and ideal for strollers and wagons. Spend the morning playing pickleball at one of the courts near the trails or disc golf in the wide-open greenspace, and utilize one of the public sitting areas and shelter houses for a picnic lunch. Find the full list of recreational opportunities here.
2. A seasonal activity
Attending a festival is an ideal opportunity to spend a summer evening with your friends and family, sampling locally made food and drinks, while walking through a historic downtown and vibing to live music.
It's also fun to experience movie night outdoors. Watch a film on the big screen at Umbarger Plaza under the stars.
If spending a relaxing day poolside is a vital piece of your usual vacation, pull up a lounge chair at Franklin Family Aquatic Center or Freedom Springs Aquatics Park. Bring your kiddos to Youngs Creek Park Spray Park (or one of the two other splash pads nearby) for a full afternoon of water activities and playground fun.

3. A local shopping experience
Instead of going straight to the shopping mall or a big box store, make time to explore the variety of stores in the small towns in Festival Country. From antiques and primitives to boutique clothing and fine art, you’ll find truly unique, quality items and the fun experience of locating the perfect purchase.
Savor the flavor of summer with locally grown produce and more at farmers markets across the county now through early fall.
4. A locally made meal and sweet treat
Nothing tastes as good as sweet and smoky barbecue on a summer day. Johnson’s BBQ Shack is known for its smoked brisket and pulled pork, seasoned to perfection with locally grown hickory and apple wood. Stop by for lunch, dinner or catering to-go.
And while you’re in Bargersville, cool off with a fresh scoop of gelato, a specialty tea or a blended drink from Cellar’s Market. Find more dining inspiration and learn where the locals love to eat here.
5. A live art or music event
Festival Country’s growing art, music and entertainment scene is as varied and active as what you’d have to drive miles to see in another county. With festivals and events happening nearly every weekend, you’re sure to find something that piques your interest.
For the outdoor lovers, pack up your lawn chairs, bring your snacks and enjoy free outdoor concerts in the evenings at the Franklin, Greenwood and Bargersville amphitheaters. If you prefer an indoor show, visit Edinburgh’s Pixy Theatre for music and theatre, Mad Hatter Shows and Event Center for live comedy, or The Historic Artcraft Theatre for classic films. Find the full event schedule here.
Everything you need for a memorable time is only a few miles away in Festival Country.
