EVENT DESCRIPTION

Local Food Summit

Purdue Extension Johnson County, and many others, are teaming up to host the Johnson County Local Food Summit. Across the nation, local foods have emerged as a growing business sector. New jobs are being created in our local food system, including producers, distributors, and new markets such as food hubs and mobile grocery services. Consumers are very interested in buying local food and are driving the demand in grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers markets. Hosting a Local Food Summit is one step we can take to begin creating networks of growers and buyers within Johnson County and launch the conversation about growing and buying more local food to strengthen our economy. This event will provide networking and sharing opportunities for the people, communities, and organizations working to create a local food system that is resilient, economically vibrant, and diverse. Our goal is that everyone attending the food summit will learn something new and make more network connections. Creating a more vibrant food system in the community can increase the quality of life for all residents, making healthy food and food access all part of the equation. Heather Tallman, a Johnson County resident, and Program Manager for Indiana Grown, will give the morning keynote presentation. Before dining on a locally sourced lunch prepared by Central Nine Career Center’s culinary students, attendees will hear from a panel of speakers, including a school food service director, a local farmer, family physician, chef/restaurant CEO, and a food distributor. The afternoon will provide an opportunity to break into groups based on a variety of food system topic areas. Cost is $10
